HighFIVE: Somasundarams

Fraternal twins Trisha and Trini Somasundaram aren’t just on top on the tennis court, they are also leaders in their community.

Winning the 2018 Colorado State High School 3A Title at #1 Singles and #2 Singles respectively, the Peak to Peak Pumas both serve on the Superior Leadership Youth Council, which creates events for the community.

Hoping to repeat their wins in 2019 as seniors, the athletes said intense sibling tennis play came with pros and cons.

“The good part is we could go hit together whenever we wanted,” Trisha said. “The bad part is we really know each other’s weaknesses!”

Trini agreed and adds that “we get really competitive, but we like to help each other get better.” She also laughed when asked if they played doubles. “Oh, no! Everyone knows we would not do well together.”

Having been introduced to many sports including soccer, ballet and gymnastics by their parents who grew up in India, both girls said they were immediately drawn to game of tennis and the thrill of hitting the ball.

In terms of collegiate play, Trisha said she is taking time to explore the best college to major in business. She is open to D2 and D3 schools for tennis too if the fit with both sports and academics is right.

Having landed the #1 spot for the Pumas again this year she said it would be great to repeat the state title win, but as Co-Captain with her sister, she just wants to help the team as much as possible.

“I felt nervous and a lot of pressure before state last year,” she explained. “Now I just want to do my best. You can’t care about what anyone else thinks. It’s about being a good sport taking care of yourself and your team,” Trisha said.

Trini also hopes to make a big impact in her senior season.

“Winning state again would be great,” she said. “I want the whole team to win.”

She sees tennis in her future as more of a fun, lifelong sport. Wanting to pursue a career in the healthcare arena, she said more than anything tennis is a great way to make friends and learn life lessons.

“You get to meet all kinds of new people and learn how to deal with winning and losing,” she said.
