HighFIVE: David Bomgaars

H5 Episode 38 / Summer 2020 / by Katie Newell

While school starting looks different than any other time in history, Valor Christian High School senior David Bomgaars is focused on faith, camaraderie and a bright future.

Captain of the tennis team his junior year and recognized by all as a dedicated role model, the 6’8” athlete balances working at a the crack of dawn on a golf course, long tennis practices, and cleaning tennis courts to contribute to the goals he has set for himself.

“It’s not the easiest but I have learned to earn everything and if you’re willing to get up early or work hard you can find a way to get on the court and get better,” he said of balancing his difficult schedule.

David’s talent on the courts had lead him to a third place finish at No. 1 doubles as a freshman and two more state appearances at No. 1 singles in his first three years at Valor.

Valor coach, Linda Schley describes the young athlete as a coach’s dream.

“More important than his success on the court is his dedication to the game and his sportsmanship.  A captain as a junior, David leads by example.  He is a supporter of all of his teammates and his opponents, as well. His love for Christ comes through in practice and on the court and he has learned to play with God instead of for God”, she explains.

Drawn to tennis while watching it on TV as a six-year-old, David said he admires the play of John Isner. Because of his height he said standing on the baseline and banging groundstrokes with his competition isn’t going to win him matches.

David credits his teammates and coaches with helping him come into his own on the courts and play to win, focusing on a serve and volley game.

“I pretty much have to hold serve,” he jokes. “If I don’t, I’m dead in the water. I don’t move that well!”

Undecided on the school at this time, David wants to attend a Christian University and study Business Finance. And while times are uncertain for many young student athletes, David reflects a quiet calmness of knowing who he is and what he stands for as he begins the next journey.

“I am just trying to reflect Christ in all of my actions, on and off the court,” David said.
