Celebrating Black History

Black History Month is a time to remember the people of our nation that helped further the idea that all people are equal.

Black history is American history — and it’s a varied and rich history.

This year’s 2019 theme is the “Black Migrations” tracking the continuous movement of blacks from the American South to the industrialized North and beyond. Beginning in the early 20th century, a growing number of families relocated from farms to cities, and from the South to the more industrialized Northeast and Midwest. Well into the century, blacks continued to break the color barrier in sports, business and politics. Sloane Stephens is a model of the Black Migration and historical advancement of African Americans in tennis from Althea Gibson to Arthur Ashe to the Williams Sister to the new generation of African American tennis players such as Frances Tiafoe. Taylor Townsend to name a few.

Join us in celebrating the legacy of Colorado’s Breaking the Barriers: An Exhibition in Courage featuring local African American tennis pioneers and contributors who lead the path.
